What attracted you to Truman?I first looked at Truman because I liked its size, and it was a nice drive from the Lake. When I looked further into the school, I saw that it was highly selective, and I really wanted to be challenged by both teachers and my fellow peers. When I finally came and visited the campus, it all just clicked, and I knew that this was where I was supposed to be.
What do you like best about Truman?I love the community both within the student body and between the students and teachers. It is reassuring to be able to walk down the sidewalk and see several people you know. At the same time, it is big enough to learn independence. The professors are very approachable and personable, they all want to develop more personal relationships. I also love knowing that a lot is expected of me.
What has surprised you about Truman?I was surprised by how devoted the students are.
What do you like most about your classes?I like that they are small and the teachers really want your input.
What do you feel is unique about Truman?Truman is unique in how much it emphasizes its mission statement. We have to get out of our major field and then are encouraged to apply this more well-rounded education to our own field. I think it creates a stronger foundation for our knowledge.
How would you describe life at Truman to a friend?Academically it is challenging, but because of its size, it’s easy to develop close relationships. There is a lot of low-key hanging out, but there are so many organizations that there is always something going on.
Have you participated in undergraduate research?I participated in an Astronomy research project for the Student Research Conference. We presented on the Differential Photometry of Eclipsing Binary Stars. This is an example of something completely out of my major that I had the opportunity to participate in because of the Liberal Studies Program.
What are your plans after graduation?I am continuing at Truman to pursue my Master’s degree in Education. After I graduate I hope to live abroad and then teach high school choir.
What do you do for fun in Kirksville?I love to just get a few friends together and watch a movie or play some games. I almost always go to the Lyceum events and the concerts, comedians, or shows that the Student Activities Board brings in -- they are a lot of fun! Also, it’s nice to go out to Thousand Hills Park and walk the trails or have picnics.
