Federal aid application procedures:

  1. Apply for a PIN at the FAFSA website.  The PIN serves as an electronic signature and provides access to your personal records in various U.S. Department of Education systems.  You and at least one parent should apply for a PIN.
  2. Complete each required section of the FAFSA, as soon after January 1 as possible. Many types of aid are awarded on a first come, first served basis.
  3. To identify Truman as one of the schools to receive your application results, list our Title IV code (002495) on the appropriate section of the FAFSA.
  4. Send the completed forms to the processor listed on the application.

After the university receives the results of your application, we will send you an award letter describing your financial aid package. Award amounts are subject to change, and some applications will be selected for verification. Copies of your federal income tax returns may be requested if your application is selected to be reviewed for verification.

Costs, Scholarships, and Financial Aid

While a high quality education is not cheap, Truman places affordability as one of the institution’s core values. Not only has Truman’s affordable cost received national recognition from such news sources as Kiplingers Personal Finance and Consumers Digest, Truman’s extensive merit-based scholarship program is one of the most generous in the country with 91% of first-time freshmen receiving Truman scholarship awards.

Students are automatically considered for some scholarships upon admission to Truman and are notified of any automatic scholarship awards in the acceptance letter.

You are encouraged to apply for admission by December 15 to ensure the greatest consideration for Truman scholarships. You must be accepted for admission by January 15 to receive full consideration for Truman’s competitive scholarship program. If you wish for your financial need to be considered during Truman’s competitive scholarship review process, you must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) no later than March 1 and list Truman as a recipient of the results.  The application for admission also serves as the application for Truman’s automatic and competitive scholarships.

Truman also offers talent-based awards in athletics and fine arts. Consideration for these awards requires that you establish contact with these departments and complete additional steps beyond submitting the admission application.

In addition to scholarship, you may receive assistance in financing your Truman education through federal financial aid. Federal aid is available in three basic categories: grants (which do not need to be repaid), loans and work-study. To determine your eligibility for federal financial aid you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid as soon as possible after January 1.
